Google Ads bug mislabels Demand Gen campaigns as Display Network

A reporting issue in Google Ads is causing confusion among advertisers, with Demand Gen campaigns showing incorrectly as placements on the Display Network.

Why we care. This misrepresentation could lead to inaccurate performance analytics and campaign management decisions for affected advertisers.

The last one. Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin confirmed that this was a bug and not a feature change.

Details:

  • Bug report start date: week of July 8, 2024
  • Affected: Demand Gen campaign reporting

What they say. “This is due to a bug that led to the Google Display Network label mistakenly appearing in some Demand Gen campaign reports,” Marvin said on X, promising more information to come.

We identified an issue with Demand Gen campaign reporting that was causing the Google Display Network label to appear incorrectly. We are taking steps to resolve this categorization error.

Google spokesperson.

Between the lines. This confusion is inappropriate because advertisers are currently waiting for Google to fix reporting issues as well as product and product listing issues that prevent advertisers from changing product groups.

Seen for the first time. We were first alerted to this error in Leslie Drechsler’s X:

The main thing. Advertisers running Demand Gen campaigns should be aware of this reporting error and wait for further updates from Google before making significant adjustments to their campaign based on current data.
